Assembly Summary – Monday 2nd June 2025
Delivered by: Ustadh Luqman Abdul (Islamic Studies Teacher)
Topic: The Virtues of the First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah and the Day of ‘Arafah
Introduction
Ustadh Luqman reminded the school that we are approaching the sacred month of Dhul-Hijjah,
one of the four sacred months in Islam. The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are among the most
blessed days of the year, even more virtuous than the days of Ramadan.
Qur’anic Guidance
“By the dawn, and by the ten nights.”
– Surah Al-Fajr (89:1–2)
According to many scholars of tafsir, the “ten nights” mentioned here refer to the first ten
days of Dhul-Hijjah, highlighting their great importance.
Hadith on the First Ten Days
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.”
The companions asked, “Not even Jihad in the path of Allah?”
He replied, “Not even Jihad, except for a man who went out with his life and wealth and returned with nothing.”
– Sahih al-Bukhari
This hadith teaches us that acts of worship done during these ten days carry more weight
than most other actions throughout the year.
The Day of ‘Arafah (9th Dhul-Hijjah)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.”
– Sahih Muslim“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Hellfire than the Day of ‘Arafah.”
– Sahih Muslim
The Day of ‘Arafah is the most sacred day of the Islamic calendar for those not performing Hajj.
It is a day of immense mercy and forgiveness.
Practical Recommendations for the School Community
For Students and Staff
- Increase in Worship: Engage in extra salah, dhikr, recitation of Qur’an and dua during these days
- Fasting: Aim to fast as many of the first nine days as possible, especially on the Day of ‘Arafah
- Takbeer: Revive the sunnah of saying the takbeerat from Fajr of the 9th to Asr of the 13th Dhul-Hijjah
- Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, laa ilaaha illallah, wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil-hamd
As a School
- Begin each day during the first ten days with takbeer in form time or morning assembly
- Organise group dhikr or short reminders on the importance of these days
- Encourage charity and good deeds throughout the school
Reflection
Ustadh Luqman reminded all students and staff that these ten days are a gift from Allah and
an opportunity to renew our intentions and seek closeness to Him. Small consistent actions
during these days are greatly magnified in reward.
