Hadith on Fasting on Ashura

Narrated by Ibn Abbas:

“The Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah and found the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. He said: ‘What is this?’ They said: ‘This is a righteous day; it is the day when Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy, so Musa fasted on this day.’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘We have more right to Musa than you.’ So he fasted on that day and commanded (the Muslims) to fast it.” — Sahih al-Bukhari

The Prophet ﷺ also said:

“Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope from Allah, will expiate the sins of the previous year.” — Sahih Muslim

Brief Incidents Associated with Ashura

Many historical events are traditionally associated with the 10th of Muharram:

  • Allah saved Prophet Musa and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh.
  • It is reported that Allah accepted the repentance of Prophet Adam.
  • It is narrated in some historical traditions that the Ark of Prophet Nuh came to rest after the flood.
  • For many Muslims, Ashura is also remembered as the day of the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali at the Battle of Karbala, a profound event that symbolizes sacrifice, justice, and steadfastness.

Note: The strongest and most authentic narration concerning Ashura is the fasting connected to the deliverance of Musa (AS).
