Virtue of Iʿtikāf
The Prophet ️ regularly observed Iʿtikāf, especially in the last ten days of Ramadan.
Hadith:
Aisha bint Abi Bakr (RA) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ️ used to observe iʿtikāf in the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah took his soul.”

“Whoever performs Iʿtikāf for ten days in Ramadan, it will be like (the reward of) two Hajj and two ʿUmrahs.”
Reported by Al-Bayhaqi in Shuʿab al-Īmān.
“Whoever performs Iʿtikāf for one day seeking the pleasure of Allah, Allah will place between him and the Hellfire in Islam three trenches, and the distance of each trench is greater than the distance between the east and the west.”
What is Iʿtikāf? (Very Brief)
Iʿtikāf means staying in the mosque with the intention of worship, devoting oneself to salah, Qurʼaan, dhikr, and duʿā while minimizing worldly activities.
Most Important Rulings (Hanafi – Very Concise)
Types:
- Wājib – if vowed.
- Sunnah Muʼakkadah – last 10 days of Ramadan.
- Nafl – voluntary at any time.
Location:
- Men: mosque.
- Women: prayer area at home.
Fasting: Required for wājib and sunnah iʿtikāf.
Leaving the mosque: Only for necessary needs (toilet, wudū, etc.).
Invalidators:
- Leaving without necessity
- Sexual relations
- Breaking the fast (in wajib/sunnah iʿtikāf)
