Truthfulness (Aṣ-Ṣidq) is one of the highest qualities encouraged in Islam. It means being honest in our words, sincere in our intentions, and trustworthy in our actions. Speaking the truth builds strong relationships, creates trust within our community, and strengthens our character. Allah and His Messenger ﷺ remind us that truthfulness is a path to righteousness and ultimately to Paradise.
Qur’an
1. Qur’an 33:70–71
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words of truth and correctness. He will amend your deeds and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great success.”
2. Qur’an 9:119
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَكُونُوا مَعَ الصَّادِقِينَ
“O you who believe! Fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.”
3. Qur’an 2:42
وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا الْحَقَّ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
“Do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know.”
Authentic Hadith
1. Truthfulness Leads to Paradise — Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
عَلَيْكُمْ بِالصِّدْقِ، فَإِنَّ الصِّدْقَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْبِرِّ، وَإِنَّ الْبِرَّ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَا يَزَالُ الرَّجُلُ يَصْدُقُ وَيَتَحَرَّى الصِّدْقَ حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ صِدِّيقًا، وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْكَذِبَ، فَإِنَّ الْكَذِبَ يَهْدِي إِلَى الْفُجُورِ، وَإِنَّ الْفُجُورَ يَهْدِي إِلَى النَّارِ، وَمَا يَزَالُ الرَّجُلُ يَكْذِبُ وَيَتَحَرَّى الْكَذِبَ حَتَّى يُكْتَبَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ كَذَّابًا
“Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A person continues to speak the truth until he is recorded with Allah as a truthful one. Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A person continues lying until he is recorded with Allah as a liar.”
2. The Signs of a Hypocrite — Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
آيَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلَاثٌ: إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ
“The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays the trust.”
3. Speak Good or Remain Silent — Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim
مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ فَلْيَقُلْ خَيْرًا أَوْ لِيَصْمُتْ
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”

- Tell the truth, even when it is difficult.
- Admit mistakes and learn from them.
- Complete schoolwork honestly and independently.
- Speak kindly and respectfully to others.
- Stand up for what is right and avoid gossip or spreading rumours.

- Model honesty in everyday conversations and actions.
- Encourage children to tell the truth without fear, using mistakes as opportunities for learning.
- Praise honesty rather than perfection.
- Discuss the importance of trust, integrity and keeping promises at home.
- Work openly and honestly in partnership with the school for the benefit of every child.
